In 2009, the time had come to give Hundige Storcenter a facelift, and transform the 35-year-old suburban shopping centre into a modern building complex, with Denmark’s largest Bilka department store (24,000 m2) as the focal point.
CSK was involved in the project at an early stage and participated in both the planning and detailed design. CSK also produced, delivered and installed all the structural steel in the renovation and extension project. This was a challenging task, not only because the order required almost 5,000 tonnes of steel, but also because of the complexity of the building.
Architectural challenge
When renovating or extending a building, one of the major challenges is always to get the existing buildings to harmonise with the new architecture. Steel offers the greatest flexibility for load-bearing structures in this situation, and this was key to it being chosen instead of concrete.
