BLOX

BLOX is located on the Copenhagen waterfront. The award-winning building with its many blocks built on top of each other was designed by internationally acclaimed architects OMA, and houses the Danish Architecture Centre and a multidisciplinary innovation environment for sustainable development, among other organisations.

The extraordinary nature of the construction project was made clear to all when BLOX received the Danish Steel Prize in 2018. The prize was awarded jointly to Dutch architects OMA, engineers COWI, the developer, Realdania By & Byg, and CSK. In the explanation for the award decision it was emphasised that the project highlights the many advantages of using steel structures in construction, in relation to the production, budget and architecture.

The panel of judges also noted that BLOX, with its many blocks, had been a very complex building to construct, especially due to the extremely small tolerances. The complexity and small tolerances also necessitated comprehensive planning and the use of digital BIM models, and in the words of the judging panel, “required considerable skill from the building contractor, Züblins, and the steel contractor, CSK.”

A total of 4,500 tonnes of steel was used, in the form of load-bearing steel structures, such as columns, beams and trusses with spans of up to 30 metres. CSK was also contracted to supply and install staircases and all associated elements, bringing the total steel usage to 5,200 tonnes.
